Remember him? yep, Calvin barely made the 50 inning cut this year, but here he is, the Forgotten Starter.

Can you say "journeyman"? I thought that you could.

One of several Arubans who have graced the playing fields in Orange and Black, Maduro is one of those pitchers who is less than the sum of his parts. It looks like his ERA should be at least a half-run less than it is, but...it isn't. Coming off a Jose Mercedes-like 2001 in which he posted some nice numbers but had a poor K:BB ration and a mediocre K:IP, Calvin pretty much followed in Mercedes' lead and regressed to his old Phillies numbers.

His work as a starter with the Orioles takes one back to the days of J.J. Bautista and Jose Mesa...he was hit hard, and often. In 2002, he surrendered a .520 slugging percentage, and an .864 OPS.

This was probably his best chance to make it in the majors. It's a shame an arm injury ended his season after only ten starts; like so many 2002 Orioles, especially pitchers, they simply didn't get enough work due to injury, circumstances, or stupidity to draw any real conclusions.

Maduro was signed by the Dodgers; hopefully, he can reestablish himself as at least a journeyman pitcher. A flyball pitcher, perhaps he can actually use Dodger Stadium as a stepping stone to a ML job again, even if only as a long man.

TO CONTRIBUTE SUCCESSFULLY IN 2003, HE SHOULD:

(1.) Find some sort of "out" pitch.

(2.) be healthy.

NOTES: had a reverse split: lefties hit only 243 off him, righties .310...overall in his career he does hold lefties to a slightly lower BA (.258) than righties (.269)
