O's fans were hoping against hope that the Brook Fordyce they would experience in 2002 would be a lot closer to the 2000 Fordyce than the 2001 model, but it turned out to be pretty much more of the same.
Thanks to his sub-par Spring Training performance and a hot start with the bat by Geronimo Gil, Fordyce didn't even start a game until the season was 12 days old. He actually went 1-for-April, finally singling in his 18th AB of the season on April 25 in a 7-0 loss to the Bosox. He then went another 12 at bats until he got Hit Number Two. He did hit .290 the rest of the season, if one can leave out those first 30 plate appearances. The problem is, that's akin to saying that the Orioles were a .500 team last year if one can just overlook the month of September.
Fordyce was a quadruple threat plus one last season. He didn't hit, hit with power, walk, steal bases, or play good defense.
There is little else to say except it's a shame that such a photogenic, outgoing, good guy has seemed to totally lose his game at the age of 30, and the Orioles still had to pay him for three more seasons.
TO SUCCESSFULLY CONTRIBUTE NEXT SEASON:
(1.) Fordyce would have to somehow magically return to the guy that came over from the White Sox. Since that's the only time he's ever been that guy, we're not holding our breath.
NOTES: hit under the Mendoza line until June 30...did hit .297 at Camden Yards...did go 6 for his last 16 to finish September at .375...only came to bat 17 times all season with a runner in scoring position; delivered one hit.
