Where Are They Now? Orioles Past Still Toiling in the Minors by Bob Bryant |
We thought the All-Star break would be a good time to take a look around baseball, and see what the ex-O's are up to. So where are they now?
Veteran outfielder and number one draft choice bust of the past Mark Smith is still playing in AAA ball, now for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Red Barons. He's hitting .291, with 9 home runs.
One time Flavor-of-the-Month closer Ryan Kohlmeier is a starter for the Charlotte Knights. He's 2-8, with a 6.33 ERA. He has managed to only walk 19 while striking out 62 in 87 innings, but he's surrendered 98 hits.
Damien Moss is 4-6 for the Durham Bulls, with a 6.60 ERA, allowing 79 hits in 60 innings, walking 39, while striking out 50.
Scott Erickson is 3-3, with a 4.50 ERA for the Norfolk Tides. He's pitched 52 innings, giving up 56 hits, walking 12, and striking out only 30.
John Stephens is 5-6, with a 4.64 ERA for the Pawtucket Red Sox. He's surrendered 111 hits in 107 innings, while walking 25 and striking out 71 (6.0/9).
Sean Douglass is 4-6, with a 5.11 ERA for the Syracuse Chiefs. He's given up 83 hits in 74 innings, with 34 walks and 66 strikeouts (8.0/9).
Keith Osik is hitting .179 as the backup catcher for the Albuquerque Isotopes.
Mike Fetters was pitching relief for the Tucson Sidewinders. He posted a 4.50 ERA in limited appearances.
Richard Paz, ex-O's farmhand (one of the few players in the organization for many years who took walks), was playing AAA ball in Birmingham. He posted a .289 average, but in only 59 AB. Since they had him listed a third baseman, and he had zero power (he played second for Frederick), he may be out of baseball. His name didn't pop up anywhere else.
Trenidad Hubbard is hitting .327, with 6 home runs, 30 RBI, 39 walks and 30 K's in 275 AB, with 22 stolen bases, for the AAA Iowa Cubs.
Fernando Lunar is playing for the same club, hitting .297 in a part-time catching role.
Calvin Pickering is hitting .332 for Omaha, with 28 HR and 64 RBI in 229 AB. He's also walked 51 times, while striking out 61.
Rick Short is playing third for the same club, hitting .265 with 6 home runs and 42 RBI in 283 AB.
Travis Driskill has posted a 5-5, 5.59 ERA for the Colorado Sky Sox. He's given up 122 hits in 92 innings, while walking 17 and striking out 65.
Chad Paronto is 4-2, with a 1.23 ERA for Memphis. He's pitched 29 innings, and given up 28 hits, while walking 12 and striking out 21.
Al Reyes has 17 appearances in short relief for the same club, posting a 3.00 ERA.
Nerio Rodriguez has a 2-1, 6.08 record for the same team, in relief.
Napoleon Calzado is the everyday first baseman for the Greenville Braves. He's hitting .351 in 289 AB with 6 homers.
Ivanon Coffie is the DH for the Round Rock Express, Nolan Ryan's Texas League team. He's only hitting .183 in 159 AB, though.
Mike Oquist is a reliever for the Midland Rockhounds of the Texas League. He's 1-3 with a 7.29 ERA.
Denny Bautista has tossed 19 innings for the Wichita Wranglers, and has an ERA of 1.89, striking out 24 and walking only 6.
Rick Helling is 1-4, 9.00 for the Oklahoma Redhawks.
Kimera Bartee is hitting .289 with 12 home runs as an outfielder with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.
Danny Clyburn is hitting .314 with 9 HR and 32 RBI with the Newark Bears, playing alongside Rickey Henderson.
Rick Elder is hitting .245 playing third for the Elmira Pioneers of the Northeast League.
