Testing, Schmesting By Bob Bryant...September 12, 2007 |
The cat is out of the bag.
No, I don't mean Jay Gibbons. Or Troy Glaus.
I mean what they represent, the Dirty Little Secret: Baseball's testing program doesn't work.
Though it's true that no one had a test for HGH, Gibbons in particular wasn't just using HGH, he was using a steroid. (And yes, I am taking license here and assuming that since he purchased it and continued to purchase it, he wasn't doing it for a friend, or so he could stockpile it; he was using it.)
Stop and think about that for a minute. He was using steroids from at least 2003 till 2005, at least 18 months of which time was blanketed by MLB's testing program.
And he was never caught.
Or, if he was, it never came to the public's awareness, and he was never suspended or disciplined.
Yet the Number One Defense of Bonds Supporters is 'Hey, you can't condemn the guy. He's never flunked a drug test.'
Neither has Jay Gibbons or Troy Glaus - or any of the other baker's dozen that the Albany investigation has still under wraps.
I've lost any outrage I ever had over the steroids mess. Between not being sure that I really care that much one way or the other, wondering if the knee-jerk reaction towards a performance-enhancing drug reflects the same mentality that makes drinking legal and smoking dope a crime, or just being overwhelmed with media coverage, hand-wringing, and innuendoes, I've decided not to lose much sleep over the issue any more; probably my strongest reaction is to be totally disinterested in Barry Bonds and note the dishonesty of Giambi and the others whose actions do come to light.
But it is noteworthy that with the revelations about Gibbons, there is an additional disturbing undercurrent...testing isn't working. It's not even coming close. Or MLB is covering up/ignoring results. Since Bonds was Selig's Number One Target as he approached Hank Aaron's home run mark, I'm assuming the former rather than the latter.
Pandora's Box is still open for business, folks.
As Robert Stack exclaimed in Airplane!..."They're all cheats and liars!"
Get used to it.
