If any player could be said to have no impact on a season, the 2000 season of Greg Myers would certainly fit the outline of such an accomplishment. After suffering a foot injury just at the opening of the season, Myers hit only .091 in April. As it turned out, thing were not destined to get that much better. Myers got no more than 28 AB in any month, virtually defining the "Sunday catcher". Hargrove did manage to keep him away from lefthanders (8 ABs), but even platooning doesn’t mean much when a player hits only .239/.368 SLG/.288 OPB on one’s "strong" side.
Myers does not make up for his lack of offense with a strong defensive game, since he is a below-average backstop. He’s no baserunner, either.
He did manage two pinch hits in six ABs, both doubles.
Perhaps Pat Gillick would be interested in picking up the second year of his deal, as he was 5 for 7 in two games against the M’s.
TO CONTRIBUTE SUCCESSFULLY NEXT SEASON, HE MUST:
1) hit like he has in the past. Not with GREAT authority, but not no authority at all.
2) be traded away so that younger catchers can play if anyone shows the ability to do so.
NOTES: did hit well late in close games (.292/.500/.370 in 24 AB)…struck out 29 times in 125 ABs…had one HR in first 100 AB though Labor Day.
