Veteran's Tournament, Day 2 (Sun., Feb. 1)

Despite the overnight rain, the groundskeepers were able to get the field in shape and they were able to resume their rainout game around 10 am.  Kerry's team ultimately got clobbered with the final score being 8-2.  He only got one AB in the game because they keep going with the lineup where it ended after the first game of the day.  In that AB, he popped up to first.  He pitched the fourth inning and gave up one hit, one walk, and got one strikeout.  However, there were “a ton of errors” behind him in the field and two unearned runs scored.  (Kerry’s note:  for the most part, defense at camp was worse this year than I’ve ever seen before.)

For the two games scheduled on Sun., they lost the first game 5-4.  In the second game, they won overwhelmingly; 9-1 was the final tally.  This left them with a chance to make it into the championship game if their main competition lost, and that is indeed what took place.  So Kerry will be playing in the Championship Game for the Veteran's Tournament Monday morning.  

The really good news is that it didn't rain on Sun. and the sun came out during the second game.  Kerry said it got quite warm there and the field finally began drying out.  He said the OF was fine for the start of action but the infield was very mucky still.  He was looking forward to better weather and better field conditions for the start of the regular action.

As for the Super Bowl Party, Kerry noted that Dave Berson (davidwb on the Birdseed board) won the pool for the fourth quarter.  Being a statistician, Kerry didn't enter but he said everyone was assigned a number which was based on the number of points scored in each quarter.  Kerry also said he spoke to a number of the pros prior to the start of the party-- Scott McGregor, Gary Roenicke, Grant Jackson, Jim Gentile, Glen Gulliver, Tim Nordbrook, and Dave Ford.
