Can't Tell the Sea Mammal Without a Scorecard... By Bob Bryant...March 7, 2008 |
Caution: for dial-up, this is a VERY slow load. I did compress the files, but the layers of text and other manipulations leaves these still pretty big; it times at about 3 minutes for a 56kbps, sorry!)
The recent 'Manatee Sighting' at the Cards' Spring Training base got me searching E-Bay for potential collectables, and I found this. I guess DC was banking on big things from Sir Sidney at the time, as were we all...

(Okay, so he's not a manatee. But let's face it, a character based on the appearance of a killer whale is a lot more interesting.)
Once the comic arrived, I discovered a couple of interesting ads inside. I can't believe Peter Angelos hasn't had a at least a dozen of these delivered by now...

Although Peter Schmuck's recent video tour of Dodgertown commented on the small size of the bungalow rooms, it's hard to imagine they are smaller than the ones the Orioles must have ordered for Ft. Lauderdale...

This item might have been geared towards the Yankees and Reds at one time, but I see that a simple renaming might lead to some sales in Charm City this season:

There were a couple of other collectable issues I picked up at the same time. This one from the DC archives dates back about four years. I guess the Dynamic Duo didn't get the job done.

And last, and probably least, this one must have been from the early days when sabermetrics was more of an 'outsider's' thing...I wonder if a super-HERO offering might be in the works today...
