2005 Fantasy Camp Diary

Day Two Action

(Tues., Feb. 1, 2005)

By Meg Goldsmith for Kerry and Craig

The Grizzlies split their games today but remain tied for first place with a 3-1 record.  The other teams they share that record with are Diamond's Jims (Jim Gentile's team) and Swags Stags (Bill Swaggerty's team).

In the first game, the Grizzlies beat Buc's Buccaneers (Grant Jackson's team) 6-0.  Craig played an all three outfield positions as well as an inning each at first and second base.  That's a new one for him but Kerry said their team is so deep defensively that Wayne Gross is moving everyone around.  At the plate, Craig went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.  Kerry only played five innings in the field, sitting out the last inning.  (Every camper has to sit out a few innings because the teams carry more than 9 people.)  Kerry spent the first three innings at shortstop and the fourth and fifth innings at third.  At the plate, he went 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored.  He also achieved a camp first for him-- he got picked off first base!  He said he thought time had been called and it turned out it hadn't.  In the meantime, Wayne Gross who was coaching third, was waiving at him to note the number of outs.  Kerry said this was unnecessary since Dave Ford, the Grizzlies' first base coach, had already told him this information.  But Kerry thought Gross had something important to share so he wandered off first.  The pitcher then threw the ball to the first baseman and Kerry dove into the bag but not quite quick enough.  He wound up with a skinned arm.  He called it "not a big deal, just a raspberry."  I told Kerry someone would earn a brown rope for that one and he said this almost always comes back to haunt the coaches because this is the sort of thing they're supposed to prevent.

The Grizzlies lost the second game 3-0 to Andy Etchebarren's Thumpers.  Kerry didn't realize he'd be starting the game until after he'd started stretching out for the game.  Wayne Gross came over to him and told him they'd like to get three innings out of him.  He asked when and Gross told him at the start of the game and then asked if Kerry knew about this.  Kerry responded, "not until now."  Fortunately they were the road team so he was able to use the top of the first to get loose.  He proceeded to throw one-hit ball for three innings, striking out five batters, walking nobody, and giving up one scratch infield hit.  Kerry went 0 for 1 with a walk while Craig went 1 for 2 at the plate in this game.  Obviously they didn't score any runs or drive any in since their team was shutout.  But he played two more innings at second base in this one as well as one at first and two in left field.

Kerry said that both he and Craig are officially "exhausted."  Fortunately, the camp has arranged an off day for tomorrow afternoon for all the campers so they can rest up for the playoff push the end of the week and for their game against the pros.  Kerry said Craig spent some time in the whirlpool today and that he was considering joining him tomorrow.  They'll certainly have some time for such things.  But aside from being tired, both Kerry and Craig are holding up very well.  Craig's ribcage is much less sore and his hamstring wasn't bothering him at all today.  Kerry's toe is markedly better.  The trainers checked it but saw no need to drain anything today.  Kerry had them bandage it and he'll continue to let them check it.  He is surprised by the lack of muscle soreness-- no sore quads (that's been a perennial problem for him in past camps), no muscle strains, and no major injuries, just the "rasberry" on his arm.  (FWIW, the last time he had a rasberry, it was ugly looking.)

One thing about playing for Wayne Gross is that he's big on the team concept.  Last year he gave all his players t-shirts with a Grizzly logo on it.  Tonight, they had their team dinner.  This was held in one of the restaurants at their hotel.  (The service there was awful last year.)  Kerry said Wayne told a lot of stories from his playing days and he promised to share some of them with me tomorrow so I can pass them along here.
