2006 Fantasy Camp Diary

Day Four Action

Thursday, February 2

by Meg Goldsmith for Kerry

Today was the final day of regular action and the Thumpers didn't fare too well.  Kerry said it was clear that the team was sandbagging these two games since they don't matter.  They have a play-in game for The Ring championship round tomorrow and they should be in good shape since their pitching is pretty deep.  However, that could change.  Kerry's arm was sore after today's game.  He said it felt a bit "dead" this morning but the shoulder was clearly sore by the end of the day.  Something to do with his triceps, not the rotator cuff injury he sustained his first year at camp.  His hope is that it'll be back to normal tomorrow.  But if he can't pitch, their team will be in bad shape heading into the playoffs since he is their second best pitcher.  I asked if his teammates knew about this development and he said he'd told a few of them about it but that was all.

As for the game action, the Thumpers lost the first game to Buc's Buccaneers 13-6.  Kerry started the game and pitched two innings.  He gave up 1 unearned run in the first when the batter reached on an error.  Then, with two outs, they got a hit and the runner went to third.  Unfortunately the relay throw got away from their first baseman and the guy scored.  Kerry also got a strikout in the first inning.  In the second inning the first two batters reached on errors, leading to runners on second and third with nobody out.  The next guy grounded out to third.  The batter after that grounded out back to the mound and the following batter grounded out to second leaving the first two guys stranded on the basepaths.

Kerry had a good game at the plate, hitting the ball hard in both games.  In the first game, he led off the game with a sharp grounder to third which he beat out at first.  Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, the throw was wild and Kerry wound up on second and ultimately came around to score their first run of the game.  He tripled in his second at bat, with the ball going over the left fielder's head all the way to the wall.  However, he was left stranded at third.  In his third at bat, he popped up in the infield on a jam job.

Defensively he sat out the third inning and played the rest of this game and all six innings of the second game at shortstop and second base.  He said there were no spectacular plays, just routine stuff.

As for the afternoon game, they played Rocky Johnson's team and "The Rock" beat the Thumpers 12-11.  At the plate Kerry came up the first time with runners on first and second and two out.  He singled to drive in a run and ultimately came around to score himself.  In his second at bat, he hit a bullet line drive right at the centerfielder.  And in his final at bat, in the bottom of the fifth down two runs, he tripled to left centerfield.  He said the ball came to rest at the bottom of the wall just under the 385 mark. He said that the consensus was that he could've scored but Etch held him up due to the game situation.  There was only one out at the time and Etch didn't want to risk a play at the plate.  Sure enough, the next batter hit a sac fly to right to bring Kerry in to score.

Tomorrow the All-Star Game will be played.  Kerry said he's almost certainly going to be on the team but he isn't going to pitch.  In addition to the All-Star Game, they have their game against the pros.  Kerry won't pitch in that game either in an effort to save his arm.  The play-in game will be played in the afternoon.

They held a Q&A with all the pros but Kerry skipped it this year.  He was tired and wanted to make it an early evening.  Their play-in game tomorrow is against David Berson's team, the Vultures (Jack Voight).  The Vultures have the #1 seed heading into the play-in game while the Thumpers are the #8 seed (ie: last).
