| Well, the Orioles got another 60 games out of Segui this
season, as he managed to miss two-thirds of the season, as usual, this time
with wrist and leg injuries. The scary thing is, for the second year in a
row, he wasn't any good when he was in there, either. He did manage to get
into a screaming match with Hall of Famer Jim Palmer in the locker room.
That, and his drain on the payroll, were pretty much his contributions in
2003.
Can his injury-prone, drug-riddled, steroid-bulked body take another season? Could he manage to play 120 games as the DH? And if he could, can he hit like he used to, instead of the way he did the last two seasons? Lots of questions, to which we'll venture a couple of guesses...no, no, and..no. If the team was willing to do what should be done, they would release him and give his AB's to Jack Cust for next year in Spring Training. But they probably won't. We'll be surprised if David Segui is on the roster next September, however. To Contribute to the Orioles Next Year, He Must: (1) Stay healthy. (insert joke of your choice here.) (2) Somehow take five years off the clock. NOTES: hit .200 right-handed...hit .211 at home, .302 on the road...As his bat slowed, he hit .209 against power pitchers.
