B.J. Ryan emerged as the gem of the Orioles' bullpen in 2003. At age 27, Ryan put together his best season in the majors, and showed real improvement in a couple of categories, though his innings pitched actually went down as his appearances went up, as he assumed the mantle of short-term lefty out of the pen with the faltering performance of Buddy Groom.

We commented a year ago that one way Ryan could really improve was in his home run totals. Well, you really can't ask for much more than only allowing one home run in fifty-plus innings. With his baserunners/9 totals coming down, as well, this added up to a solid season.

As it now appears, B.J. Ryan may be the best of the Syd Thrift legacy, since Syd acquired Ryan in 1999 from the Reds for Juan Guzman. If Thrift had made many more trades like that one, the Orioles would be a .500 club today.

Ryan has continued to improve each year. If he can only harness that herky-jerky delivery just a bit more, we may expect one more step forward for this solid lefty in the bullpen.

TO CONTRIBUTE SUCCESSFULLY TO THE ORIOLES NEXT YEAR, HE SHOULD:

Pitch exactly the way he did in 2003, just with a continued, perhaps accelerated, decrease in walks. It remains the weakness in his game.

NOTES: didn't give up a run until his 12th appearance...won the Opening Day Blizzard Bowl with an inning of hitless relief...only went one three-game stint in August without an appearance...from July 25 on, only went the one three-game stint, and one four-game stint, of not appearing in games...allowed opposing batters a .227 BAA...pitched to a 2.63 ERA at Camden Yards...held left-handers to a .186 BA...had a 1.08 ERA after the All-Star Game...held the Red Sox to a .056 BAA in 9 appearances...held the Yankees to a 1.17 ERA in 7 appearances...opposing batters hit .087 when putting Ryan's first pitch in play.
