| Well, Geronimo ended 2002 as the Orioles starting catcher,
despite a passed ball and footwork problem, and an offensive capability so
offensive that he won the Ally Award from the Belfry. So what happened in
2003? He didn't hit, and he again had footwork and passed ball problems, and
this time the
pitchers began to complain about his game-calling, too. Now that's pretty
much all you can ask for as far as a bad performance out of a catcher is
concerned. The Orioles agreed, as they sent him down to Ottawa, where he did contribute to the Lynx' push for the playoffs. That was pretty much the season highlight for him, though. When he returned to the Orioles after the roster expansion, nothing had really changed. Brook Fordyce was still ahead of him, not because he was so much better than The Chief, but because The Chief was so bad. He'll be working elsewhere in 2004. NOTES: did manage to hit .293 against left-handers...actually hit .339 in May...hit .304 against the Devil Rays.
