Sunday, Feb. 2 Game action
Before Kerry and Craig set out for camp, I gave them one set of instructions based on experiences during previous years at camp. First, I told them not to get sick. The first year they attended (1999) they, along with about half the other campers, came down with the flu. Second, I told them not to break anything. Seems like I hear about at least one broken hand, arm, or leg during the course of the week. And third, I told them not to pull anything. Craig told us that he pulled his hamstring in his summer baseball league and I didn't want to hear about another hamstring (or any other muscle) pull. Well, they didn't listen to me. Kerry violated Rule #2 when he got hit in the hand with the second pitch of the first game. He did manage to score but he was through batting for the day. He pitched in the third inning and was credited with the win. Because of a new rule for the veteran's tournament, he actually started pitching in the second game. He went 1 2/3 innings before the inning was called due to the "Mercy Rule" after his teammates allowed four unearned runs to score behind him. He said there was a dropped pop foul and a booted grounder. But this is the end of game participation for him for the week. His hand swelled up and is now bandaged from the knuckles to the elbow so he can't do anything. And, yes, his team wound up losing the game, giving them a 2-2 record in the veteran's tournament.
Craig's team lost both of their games and Craig apparently felt some sympathy pains because, like Kerry, he was hit on the thumb with a pitch. Fortunately for him, it wasn't broken, just bruised. Craig also strained his ribcage area. He only got one hit for the day, a single, and wasn't happy about his performance either at the plate or in the field. He had a high sky to deal with and dropped two balls in the sun. Kerry told me that left field was THE toughest position on the field in the afternoon because the sun was beating right into that area of the park.
