Monday, Feb. 3 Game action

The draft was held today and Craig was picked by Dave Ford.  They have changed the managers this year and Ford, who has been in a coach in previous years, is managing.  Gary Roenicke and Moe Drabowsky are serving as his coaches.  Both Kerry and Craig report that Moe is looking good this year.  To Kerry's surprise, he was drafted by Grant Jackson.  He was told by someone "in the know" that he was the 110th selection of the draft this year because nobody knows when or if he'll be able to play this year.  Of course, this is a hindrance to Grant Jackson since each team only carries 11 players.  He served the team by coaching first base and chasing foul balls in their matchup today.  Unfortunately, I forgot to ask whether or not they won the game.

As for Craig's game, he said it was a disaster.  They managed two hits in a 10-0 loss against Tim Nordbrook's team.  Craig got one of the two hits-- a laser shot in the gap between the left fielder and center fielder.  He said he hit it so hard that he was still in the batters box when it landed.  He struck out on a low outside curve in his second AB.  He said his team walked too many guys and suffered from spotty defense.  On the plus side, they have a lot of speed.  They also have one of the better pitchers in camp but he didn't have it in today's outing.

During the break, the rookies got an excellent example of gold and brown ropes when Tim Nordbrook was awarded both!  Turns out that Nordbrook was out on the links with Dave Johnson ("DJ" at camp) and hit a hole in one on a 143 yard shot.  Instead of picking up the ball and hanging on to it, he used it on the next hole where he promptly hit it into a tree where it ricocheted into the water.  Needless to say, a lot of razzing took place afterwards.  And today he earned a gold rope for the hole-in-one and a brown rope for not hanging onto the ball.

The campers were also reminded that they need to keep their eyes open when Moe is around.  During lunch, he was walking around putting shaving cream on top of the hats of some of the unsuspecting campers.  Craig said everyone else was laughing their heads off.  It's nice to hear that Moe is back to his old tricks.  I'm sure there will be more as the week continues.
